My daughter, Devyn, loves to help in the kitchen. For Christmas, she received this really cool cookbook for kids called The Complete Baking Book for Young Chefs by America’s Test Kitchen. She’s been looking through the book and planning everything she wants to make! 🙂
I love her enthusiasm and her love for new and exciting things but I found myself saying, ”not today” a lot lately. Whether it’s because I had a long and stressful day at work or I was up late cleaning or doing other household chores, or maybe I just wanted to binge watch my favorite Netflix shows…. Whatever the reason, I realized I was missing out on precious time with my baby girl.
So Sunday was the day! She picked the recipe for her favorite cookies in the whole wide world. SUGAR COOKIES!! Devyn made a list of all the ingredients we would need and then we got to work!
Step 1. Gather the ingredients and supplies
Step 2. In the large bowl, combine all of the dry ingredients with a whisk (flour, sugar, salt, baking soda, baking powder). In the small bowl combine the went ingredients (egg and vanilla extract).
This was our first time baking cookies from scratch. I’m more of a break and bake kind of gal! 🙂 Since this was our first time baking from scratch, I also didn’t know we would need a food processor. My bad! But hey, we improvised! We had to go old school and just use our hands. I also didn’t have a rolling pin, so we had to use a cooking spray can to flatten out our dough! LOL!!
Step 3. After the dough is flattened out, put it in the refrigerator for an hour and a half. After it’s chilled, take the dough out and use your cookie cutters to make your shapes. Once all of the cookies have been cut out, transfer them over to your parchment paper lined baking sheet.
Step 4. Pre-heat the oven to 300 degrees. Bake cookies for 18-22 minutes. Once golden brown, the cookies are ready to come out. Let them stand for 30 minutes before decorating.
The final result!
